Re: The passing of a legend: Ed Kaspriske 1941-2019

Ed introduced me to the hobby back in 1993 when I answered a horn related ad he had placed in Trains magazine. It wasn't long before he was helping me identify the first horn in my collection a K3LA and setting up a reliable horn honk system. His horn identification audio cassettes and related VHS m...

Re: Nathan Airchime P5 Oval Inlets ex-Missouri Pacific 1953 era horn.

Fantastic sounding indeed! You may want to include the Texas Pacific in your quest for the horn's origin. T&P and Missouri Pacific merged in 1976. Through the 50's-60's the two roads had similar paint schemes for road power but while the MP was largely a Leslie road T&P chose Nathan early on...

Re: Horn Risers

Collector Jim Smith's risers were featured in a H&W Journal Spring 2004 article, Horn In A Box. Jim had three Prime risers altered for use with his H5 No.24. They appeared after machining similar to the subject except lacked the hole slots.

Re: The Leslie S-5A and S-3E; were they ever produced?

Right, about the C&O's GP-7s. The tape, now in CD, MARION-OHIO was recorded in 1969 and released in 1987 included N&W GP-9s,a PC GP-7, and C&O geeps. I think the recording's producer, Ron McElrath, may have gotten the C&O geep's misidentified with other road's geeps having dynamic br...

Re: 3 Digit Bell S5T???

My 1952 S5TF plays E or 324 cps for it's 31 bell and a slightly off 55 bell at 544 cps. The rest of the horn's frequencies are within ten or so cps from the advertised with the 44 bell 7cps higher. There must have been some pretty smooth and unusual sounding combinations hidden in those early, early...

Nice catch!
Well sir, the BNSF had at least one RS-3B for sure. I audio recorded it aboard a south bound freight departing Wichita, Ks. back in the winter of 04 .

Re: Accurate Leslie S5A Pictures???

According to the late Ken Lanovich of Evergreen Park, ILL. fallen flag Chesapeake and Ohio Rwy. had some early GP-7s with S5A's. Ken personally encountered C&O S5As while railfanning south Chicago and was quick to point out an excellent photo spotting feature of the horn was the front view of an...
