Too labor / time intensive for compared to the cost of replacement

Re: S3BJ and replica SL4T

Im pretty shire the sl4t is a real one. Here is my original Leslie SL4T ex-Amtrak EMD SDP40F #531 Leslie17.jpg Leslie16.jpgLeslie15.jpg I see now. The real on is lower. No, not true. The real one is not lower. The replica is pretty much a spot on copy of the Leslie low-profile 5-chime manifold. Ken...

Re: S3BJ and replica SL4T

Here is 2 horns S3BJ and replica SL4T I picked up yesterday at Ed Kaspriske's. The S3BJ is mine and the replica SL4T is Ryan Grantham's. Ed and I had a awesome day chasing trains that day. I will be posting more on that day soon. Plus we went to Steamtown Scranton, PA.521.jpg517.jpg523.jpg Im prett...

Re: The Leslie S-5A and S-3E; were they ever produced?

Lets get a better version of that picture. http://s3.amazonaws.com/rrpa_photos/29368/MILW%20999-3%20%20Tacoma,%20WA%20%205-15-79.jpg This is GP20 #999. Built as a GP9 in 1954. This was long after the switch to two digit bells, and after the S3E was discontinued. As stated before, there appears to o...

Re: The Leslie S-5A and S-3E; were they ever produced?

Picking up on the conversation re: Milwaukee Road's S-5D's, I think when Leslie switched from the S-5D frequencies of 277, 330, 392, 440, 554 that they had used in 1951 to the 250 310 370 550 frequencies, they probably had a surplus of the older manifold (rack) castings for the S-5D; hence, that wo...

Re: The Leslie S-5A and S-3E; were they ever produced?

The horn I had had dowel pins fitted unto the base of the bells, each with a pin hole in the side of the dowel. The 25 bell had the largest hole and the 55 the smallest. Three bolts, not studs with nuts, fastened each bell to the manifold. Sounds like a bell set from a standard "Var." ori...

Re: The Leslie S-5A and S-3E; were they ever produced?

You must be correct, Mike. In checking the Moyer site I see that the true "5D's" had bells 277, 330, 392, 440, 554. So, would the "277", "330", ...etc. have been marked with those numbers on the bells of the S-5D? As noted, the manifold of the Milwaukee (the one marked...

Re: The Leslie S-5A and S-3E; were they ever produced?

At one time I owned one a Milwaukee S-5D-RF. The metal tag on the bracket said, "S-5D". The round bell imprints were as follows: 25, 31, 37, 44, 55. ... So then it wasn't an S5D. It was an S5T built onto an S5D manifold. Basically some railroad shop person used the manifold and much later...
