Most locomotives do not have a physical pipe connection into the horn. The air supply pipe is welded to the exterior sheet metal, and a thick rubber gasket is then used between the base of the horn and the sheet metal where the horn is bolted down. Die cast aluminum, such as K horns and Leslie RS chambers, often has zinc alloyed with the aluminum. The zinc is what causes the voids, as it evaporates under the heat of welding.

Take two car batteries and wire them in series. You can disconnect them and charge with a normal battery charger. 24 volt DC is the standard electrical voltage of most large buses in North America. While you may have to look around a bit there are 24 volt alternators, jump packs and battery chargers...
