Information on my K5HL

Postby Holden K3 » Fri May 10, 2019 2:49 pm

I was curious if anyone could give me some details on my K5HL, Ser.# 43820. I bought it off of EBay a few years back, just as I started getting into this hobby. I read on the information/literature page that the serial number places it around 2006. The 1L bell is one piece and raised letter, while every other bell is not, (Just has the number). In reading, am I supposed to assume that the 3&4 bells are "A"'s without the "A" being present?? Am I to assume the 1L bell has been replaced at some point? The owner before me ground out the stamping made by the original railroad. All I can see is a chunk of ground out letters and RR at the end of that.

As I feather the Graham White valve, the horn has a pretty mellow and smooth tone until one of the bells kicks in and it sounds rather flat and almost like an out of tune, pissed of Leslie.

Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks, Nick.

Here are some very poor shots of it on my truck. I can grab some more when the weather is better if you need me to. Thoughts?

The 1L has been replaced, as you suspected. There are no one piece non raised letter 1L's in existence.

Also, the first time you hit a rock or something that K5HL is probably going to be toast. Put it on top, it wasn't meant to be that close to the ground unprotected.

The RR stamping on it is most likely from UPRR, as they stamp their horns nearly every time they get replaced now. Depending on where you got it from, it's most likely parted together.

Hi Reed S.,
Appreciate the information, thank you. I suspected it was from UP and that the 1L was replaced. Any thoughts on the 3/4 being A’s? Been reading a lot on this sight about MP no longer stamping “A”s into the bells and tuning them as such anyways.

As for the concern of the demise of the Horn, I have a lifted super duty that I hang all my horns on. All of them have lived there from time to time and knock on wood, none of them, even the P5 have had issues. The lowest bell is still above the rear bumper. I am conscientious about them being there and if there are plans to go off road, I simply removed them. Down fall to all this, being hidden they aren’t very loud. I’ve been trying to find a way to mount them above that doesn’t invite theft or unwanted visits from the PD.

Thanks again for your time.
Nick
